Any NTSA Officer Seen On The Road Harassing Motorists Should Be Arrested. Police Boss

The National Police Service approved of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to ban officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority from enforcing traffic laws in Kenya. Assistant Inspector General of Police, Charles Owino, said it was the duty of traffic officers to enforce the law and not NTSA agents.


Speaking on Citizen Extra on Wednesday, January 10, Owino said President Uhuru’s move will restore order in the face of several fatal accidents witnessed in the month of December 2017 that claimed over 300 lives.

“NTSA agents should never have been on the roads to begin with. It is the duty of police to enforce laws. The law is clear and it says the police should administer alcohol breathalyser tests to motorists. It is also only the police who can flag down speeding motorists,” said Owino. Road Safety Association of Kenya Chairperson David Kiarie echoed Owino’s sentiments, saying NTSA did not have enough officers to enforce traffic rules.


Speaking on Tuesday, January 9, Uhuru told NTSA to stick to police making and leave the rest to traffic police department. Previously, several opposition allied legislators vowed to see the NTSA disbanded, with the Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi saying he will introduce a bill in Parliament to this effect. Other legislators who supported this move were NASA co-leader Moses Wetangula and ODM National Chairman John Mbadi.
