Kenya Police headquarters on high alert after discovering 86 GSU officers stole KSh 12 million
One of the records in TUKO.co.ke's possession shows that 86 officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) were illegally paid a total of KSh12,034,919. READ ALSO: IG Boinnet warns Kenyans celebrating NTSA withdrawal from roads by drinking Another communication from the Kenya Police headquarters show that officers attached to Railways Police Unit had claimed millions of shillings even though they knew it was fraudulent.
Both Vigilance House and the GSU headquarters has directed that further payment be stopped and the amount be recovered from the officers' salaries. "This headquarters has been carrying out investigations into fraudulent claims and payment of transfer allowances to several officers under your command," read one of the letters addressed to the heads of Nakuru, Mtito Andei and Nairobi Railways Police Units among other commanders.
The reports indicate that the officers made the claims knowing that the claims were false and fraudulent. This however is just a tip of the iceberg. The National Police Service has over 100,000 officers who are regularly transferred, implying the amount could be higher. In the case of the GSU, the officers are of the ranks of between Constable and Superitendent of Police, according to the report. They received the money between 2011 and December 2017.
The officers -49 Constables, 26 Corporal, 5 Sergeants, 4 Inspectors and 2 Superitendents -have been informed of the respective amounts they were paid and that it will be deducted from their salaries. In the GSU report, the officer who received the highest amount was paid KSh300,378 while the least paid received KSh18,900.
